Journalism and mass communication is an Under Graduate Programme offered under the Bachelor of Arts (BA) which is a course that takes 3 years to complete. This course involves both the theoretical aspect as well as the practical part of the Journalism, television, newspapers, magazines, the internet, advertising, PR, etc. The following are some of the major subjects taught in media colleges; Media laws and ethics, Communication theory, Mass media, Reporting and editing, Photo Journalism, Web Journalism, Advertising principles, PR and corporate communication, etc In addition to theory as taught in the classroom, the media colleges also offer practical sessions though workshops, labs, internships, industrial visits, media projects and research assignments.
The commonly accepted entrance exams for admission to BA (Journalism and Mass Communication) are: CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA, AMIE, & state level. It is also important that many colleges look at examinations such as UGAT, UPSEE, MUST, DU JAT and 12th standard final examination of U.P and other states, while admitting candidates in this very program. Clearing one or more of these entrance tests, qualifying the respective cut-off’s and merit criteria make a candidate entitled to apply for programme. However, other colleges and universities too have their own tests for admission in the institutions they are affiliated with.
