India’s higher education system is expected to have grown significantly by the year 2024 so as to meet the needs of the expanding population. It is expected that there will be more than 1000 universities in the country, with more than 40 million students. This will have meant that more new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Managements (IIMs) and other specialized institutes would have been set up to offer competitive technical and management education. Private institutes will have the largest contribution, especially as they develop new curriculums and teaching techniques.
An increased emphasis on research and entrepreneurship for the institutes is predictable. Even more collaborations between Indian and foreign Institutes/Universities for exchange programs of students and faculty members could be expected. This would later be followed by the adoption of more liberal ideas such as online degrees, distance learning etc due to increase in internet connectivity and technology.” It could be stated that the government’s efforts regarding the National Education Policy 2020, including multidisciplinary education and internationalization, will begin to yield results. In sum, the overall growth of India’s higher education system will be extremely remarkable between 2022 and to become one of the largest systems in the world. However, issues like infrastructure, quality and quantity, employment, etc will continue to prevail leaving the nation needing constant policy changes.
