BA Sanskrit is an undergraduate course that offers education in the complete details of the Sanskrit language, its literature, philosophy along with its scriptures. This 3-year long course includes Sanskrit grammar, meter, poetry, drama, philosophy, linguistics, history of ancient India, Vedas, Upanishads, etc. The students are taught how to read, write, speak and understand Sanskrit in depth through extensive reading of Sanskrit texts. Hence the program is designed to equip the students with proper grounding in Sanskrit language and literature. On completion of the program the graduates can opt for post graduate research in Sanskrit or related fields, translator jobs, teaching positions or may join the archaeological and philosophical fields among others.

The entrance tests recognized for admission in BA in Sanskrit at the common national level are CUET conducted by National Testing Agency. Many universities across India such as Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Calcutta University, etc offer admission based on CUET score. Some universities and colleges also have their own entrance examinations in addition to the above tests. To have a basic eligibility so that one can get through most of the institutes, one has to clear the 12th standard examination in any group with at least required percentage of marks from a known board. Many colleges require competence in Sanskrit as a subject up to the 10+2 standard. Certain concessions in cut-off marks are offered to those candidates who have their background from the stream of Sanskrit.

1. A candidate must have passed 10+2 examination or equivalent from a recognised board with Sanskrit as one of the subjects. 

2. Minimum aggregate marks percentage criteria may range from 45-55% for general category students only. 

3. Some of the clause such as reservation and relaxations in eligibility criteria are applicable as per university or college rule.

4. There are universities that set their own tests for admission into the course of their choice.

5. Some rudimentary understanding of the Sanskrit language is necessary in order to read and analyze a variety of Sanskrit texts.

6. Fluency in speaking, reading and writing in English or any Indian language is desirable to acquire the rules of Sanskrit grammar and literature.
