Bachelors of Science in Nautical Science is an Under Graduate Academic Program that takes Three (3) years to complete and prepares the candidate to become a merchant navy officer. Some of the subjects studied in the curriculum include principles of navigation, cargos, meteorology, ship stability, law, leadership and communication among others. The students also get to practice what they have been learning in school by going out on ships. It also prepares the cadets such skills as navigation, cargo operations, operating and controlling the ships, managing crews among other skills that assist them in performing various tasks on merchant ships.
It is rather easy to get admission in the B.Sc. For the Nautical Science course, a student has to pass class 12th in the science stream grouping in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English with minimum aggregate marks. Some of the examinations are conducted by institutes and universities themselves while some are conducted by other universities such as IMU CET which is conducted by Indian Maritime University, TIMSAT conducted by Tolani Maritime Institute and UGAT conducted by Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Sambalpur among others. Passing of these entrance tests determines one’s chances to undergo admission in the B.Sc. Programs that are affiliated to approved institutes and maritime training academies of the country are B.Sc. Nautical Science.
