The Certificate Course in Food & Beverage Service is a short term professional course with curriculum based on food and beverage service operation. It takes on average 6 months to one year to complete this course, and it offers both a theoretical understanding of the subject as well as hands-on training. Topics that students cover includes; types of food and beverage outlets, menu planning and designing, food and drinks matching, customer relations and manners of handling complains. They are also trained in where to place cutleries, how to order and serve food and bill customers, inventory and costs. It is a compulsory on the job training in hotels and restaurants as part of efforts to expose the students to practical aspects.
There is no bar in terms of age but the minimum qualification required to seek admission is 10+2 passed in any stream. Certain institutes use performance in qualifying tests as one of their standards of admittance to the course. The admission procedure for the course is through NCHM JEE for National Council for Hotel Management for admission to their affiliate institutes. Private institutes may have their own tests or they may give admission based on merit in 10+2 examinations. Many colleges also take into consideration the performance in ATKT exams while admitting the students into the Certificate course besides the score card of the qualifying examination of 10+2.
