Master of Science or MS is a postgraduate level course that aims at offering advanced learning and specialization in science and technology fields. An MS degree takes an average of 2 years and is composed of 4 semesters. In some specializations such as MS in Data Science, Cybersecurity or Software Engineering it can be 1 or 1.5 years also. This depends on the university whereby Education can be classroom teaching and lab work or purely research activities. The fees structure, courses offered and the specializations offered in MS differ from one university to the other. Its goal is to foster the development of practical competencies and knowledge in a particular area of science or in interdisciplinary fields. The companies offer live projects, guest lectures, and internships to the students to get an industry exposure in various universities offering MS degrees.
The usual tests for admission to MS courses in the Indian universities are the GATE and JAM tests that are conducted as soon as the students graduate in their respective fields. GRE and IELTS scores and previous academic transcripts are used for admission into MS programs in countries such as USA, Canada, UK and Australia. These standardized tests coupled with the past academic performance are employed by admission committees jointly with extra-curricular activities to assess the candidate’s suitability for the given program across the universities.
