Master of Visual Arts (MVA) is a postgraduate academic master’s degree awarded in the field of visual arts. It deals with the postgraduate level education in different streams of visual arts such as painting, sculpture, photography, filmmaking, design etc. The MVA course is normally of two years’ full time duration. Some of the colleges also provide part time duration of 3 years also.
The MVA curriculum entails understanding of art history, theories and criticism, advanced skills in the chosen specialization for instance, painting, sculpture, etc., and exposure to new forms of visual arts. Thesis project or dissertation has to be developed at the end by the students. Some of the entrance tests that are being accepted for MVA admissions include: UGC NET/SET, CEED, NID DAT, NIFT, College wise tests like BHU RET, JNUEE etc. There are also some colleges which select the candidates through the process other than the admission test such as portfolio, statement of purpose and interview. The requirement for MVA is a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or other related field. Though not mandatory, some colleges do prefer work experience of the candidate in specific areas.

1. The applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree in any subject with not less than 50% marks in the Degree Examination from a University. The minimum mark requirement may be even lowered in some institutes.
2. If the student does not have a bachelor’s degree, 5 years of professional work experience in the related industry, and creative portfolio in the focus area.
3. The candidate should be proficient in English as the study material is in English majorly as MVA programs are. May be accompanied by the results of an English proficiency test.
4. An extensive portfolio of artworks that suggest that the candidate satisfies the required level of proficiency in the area of specialization such as painting, sculpture, graphic etc portfolio norms differ from institute to institute.
5. A 250–300-word statement of purpose explaining why the aspirant is interested in this course, their future plans and how the course will help in his/her development.
