Ph.D. in Film Studies is an academic research programme that can take between three to five years for a candidate to complete in the area of cinema and moving image. They take higher level courses that cover the historical, analytical, and critical aspects of film, in addition to a wide variety of theoretical, cultural, social, technological, and aesthetic ways of approaching, understanding and making films and media. The program offers an understanding of how methods work and encourages students to focus on subjects such as national cinemas, genres, authorship, and concerns of race, gender, sexuality, politics, and psychology in screen media. Students develop critical discourses on film as both texts and as an industry, on audiences and the cultures of cinema.
The common admission requirements for the program are; TOEFL, IELTS and other standard tests like GRE that assess verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning as well as analytical writing. Some colleges may also consider graduate courses in a related master’s degree program instead of requiring standardized tests. Applicants are expected to include at least one strong academic reference letters, a statement of purpose describing the proposed research objectives, a writing sample illustrating the applicant’s critical thinking ability, and a proposal outlining the planned dissertation research for a novel scholarly film investigation.
