PhD (Medicinal Plants) is one of the research based doctorate degree programs in the field of medicinal plants with its focus on biochemical aspect and utilization of plants. The duration can take between 3-5 years to complete depending on the curriculum and course structure of a given university. In the first year, students complete courses to introduce them to basic aspects of plant biology, phytochemistry, pharmacognosy, ethnopharmacology, plant anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, traditional medicine systems, taxonomy and so on, and the exams aimed at determining the customers’ research-readiness. The next stage involves selection of a research problem, the researcher engages in intensive research under the supervision of faculty and lastly, develops and defends a doctoral thesis.
Eligibility test accepted as entrance examination for admission to Ph.D. (Medicinal Plants) are UGC NET, GATE, ICMR JRF, the State level eligibility test and university written test with interview. The institutes may also offer direct admission to the candidates who have done their Masters in Medicinal Plants / Botany / Pharmacognosy and have qualified GPAT, CSIR-UGC NET or ICMR-JRF. For a candidate who has prior experience in research or industrial experience then he is most suited for the position as he has accumulated knowledge and analytical skills from the exposure. There are no academic requirements that are specific to the institutes from which the students graduated, but a good knowledge of English and some percentage criteria in the postgraduate examination are compulsory.
