A Ph.D. or a Doctor of Philosophy is an academic or professional doctorate that deals with the qualification in an academic discipline through independent research. For Ph.D. programs, the course work may last between three to six years depending on the field of study, the program and the kind of research the student is undertaking. The first two years are often spent in taking courses in the major field, seminars and comprehensive examinations. The years to come are dedicated to designing, executing, and delivering substantial amounts of primary research that extends the current understanding of some domain of study under the mentorship of a faculty member.
Admission to Ph.D. programs, for instance, demands a bachelor’s degree with high grades, letters of recommendation, an autobiography that details one’s research interests and goals, and test scores in one of several graduate school entrance exams, including the GRE, GMAT or LSAT. Other examinations used are professional ones like IAS civil services examination for Ph.D. for admission to different IITs/IISERs etc. Performance on these standardized tests accompanied by excellent academic records reveal that the applicants are indeed capable and motivated to complete a highly competitive Ph.D. program.
