Ph.D. in Chemistry is a research based Doctorate degree program that provides a strong foundation and advanced concepts and research in the area of specialization. Actually, it takes about 4-5 years for a full-time Ph.D student in the field of Chemistry. The first 2-3 years include class work covers subjects such as advanced organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, quantum mechanics spectroscopy. and research experience in the potential advisor’s laboratory. This assists the students to get more theoretical and practical knowledge alongside the identification of the research area of focus for the dissertation.
The entry tests recognised for the purpose of admission to University’s in India for Ph.D. programmes in Chemistry are UGC NET, GATE, CSIR NET and JEST. Those who have valid scores in any of these examinations and a master’s degree in chemistry are eligible to take admission for the doctoral program offered in IITs, central universities, and other research institutions. How ever, some institutions admit students based on an interview rather than the marks obtained in the entrance test.
Highlight | Detail |
---|---|
Full Form | Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry |
Duration | 3-5 years |
Course Level | Doctoral |
Eligibility | Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field, with a minimum required percentage (usually 55-60%), and sometimes relevant research experience |
Top Colleges | IITs, IISc, JNU, DU, BHU, University of Hyderabad, TIFR |
Entrance Exam | CSIR-NET, GATE, JRF, university-specific entrance exams |
1. Must possess Master degree in chemistry or any related branch of biochemistry/ chemical engineering with minimum 55% marks from a recognized university.
2. Minor Qualification exam as GATE/CSIR-NET/JRF or any other test conducted by different organization. A few institutes admit students directly into this course based on their results in the masters degree.
3. The shortlisted candidates are expected to attend an interview where they defend their proposed research interests and research proposals to assess the research potential.
4. The last decision of the candidate’s admission is influenced by the applicant’s academic performance, performance in the entrance test/s, the research proposal, and the interview.
5. Industry candidates are encouraged to have experience in chemistry research within the last five years.
6. The experience in English language is necessary, because research papers and thesis have to be provided in English. The test takers who do not possess the English fluency have to clear test such as TOEFL/IELTS.
