Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering, often abbreviated as Ph.D. or DOCE, is a third cycle doctoral research program that takes three to five years to complete. It is the last academic award in the specialty of civil engineering offered by universities to candidates who complete the required course of study and pass the examinations. The program aims at teaching independent research skills and practical engineering approaches for solving civil structure design challenges. To achieve this, learners embark on research in subfields under the supervision of faculty members to develop impactful findings in areas such as structural engineering, transport engineering, environmental engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Course work includes civil engineering pro courses in applied math, analysis techniques, infrastructure modelling; research method and proposal preparation.
The few national-level Common entrance examinations accepted for admission to Ph D Civil Engineering programmes in most of the institutes are GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering and CSIR UGC NET – Council of Scientific Industrial Research University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. Moreover, the individual institutes also set their own written examinations and interviews to test their research aptitude and subject knowledge and the communication ability of the candidates in order to make final selections. Higher GATE or NET scores increases the probability to be able to get admitted and to also be granted for a scholarship at some of the most prestigious IITs, NITs and universities in India.
