Doctor of Philosophy in Electronics or Ph.D. Electronics is a doctorate program related to electronics engineering and is based on research. The usual time to complete a Ph.D. in Electronics takes 3 to 5 years to complete. The program begins with selected senior level electronics engineering subjects such as electronic analog and digital systems, electronics microelectronics, VLSI electronics signals and information processing, electronics embedded systems, electronics communications, and electronics devices and circuits. Students are supposed to conduct research on their own with supervision of the faculty advisors and the programme culminates with the preparation and defence of the doctoral thesis based on the research study that adds new knowledge to the discipline.
The entrance tests allowed for admission into Institutes and Universities offering Ph.D. in Electronics are GATE: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, NET: National Eligibility Test by CSIR or UGC and SET: State Eligibility Test. Some institutes also accept the valid scores of GRE – Graduate Record Examination or GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test. Candidates visiting the final shortlist must sit for an interview and/or written examination. The admission criteria essentially involves the candidate’s performance in the entrance tests, the academic rating of candidate and research experience wherever applicable. Tutorial fee support is also available in most instances and it comes with teaching or research assistantship where applicable.
