Ph.D or Doctor of Philosophy in English is the terminal or ultimate degree awarded to students in the field of English Language and Literature. It is a coursework-based and research-based doctorate program which prepares learners for the independent research and contributing new knowledge in different fields of English such as linguistics, literature, critical theory, rhetoric, creative writing and comparative studies. It normally takes 4-6 years to complete full-time Ph.D. program in English and this period is dedicated to study and research.
These are the entrance tests that are valid for admission in Ph.D. English courses at many universities across the country, namely UGC NET English, SET English, JRF and sometimes TIFR. The important dates which should be noted are – UGC NET exam is conducted twice a year i.e., in the month of June and December, The timing of SET exam may vary from state to state, The last date for filing of JRF is mostly in the month of March/ April, TIFR exam is conducted once in a year in the month of May- June. It is common to find university admission processes beginning in May-June for each university while the academic sessions commence in July-August each year.

1. The person should possess a Master’s degree in English or in any other related field and the candidate must have scored not less than 55% in the examination from any recognized university.
