Geology Ph.D. is an academic postgraduate degree research program designed to study various elements of the earth including its formation, structure, and history. Full-time Ph.D. in Geology takes 4-6 years to complete for the candidates who attend the classes regularly and conduct their research during the stipulated time. In the first 2 years, the student is taught the subjects that include igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, geophysics, geochemistry, paleontology, geomathematics, and field geology. This means that to qualify for the comprehensive examination towards the end of the second year the student has to ensure that he or she has a C.G.P.A of not less than-. Students then take 2-4 more years to work on an original research dissertation in their area of specialization under the supervision of faculty members. A student must engage in extensive research in the identified area of specialization, present the results in a dissertation and then defend them before the thesis committee.
The most widely accepted graduate entrance exams for Geology Ph.D. programs are: Other entrance tests include the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Subject Test in Geology that examines knowledge of physical and historical geology of undergraduate calibreat; TOEFL for non-English speaking students to determine their fluency in English; IELTS for courses delivered in English. GRE scores especially the quantitative, analytical writing and verbal sections are preferred. Aside from GPA scores, other experiences such as research exposure, publications, internships and academic letters of recommendation also improve one’s PH.D applications .
