Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy is the highest level of education that an individual can pursue in different fields. Ph.D. programs usually take between 3-5 years of consecutive, full-time study and writing requirements. The emphasis is placed on the independent study of a particular field of choice under the supervision of a faculty mentor. During the first years, students complete advanced coursework in research methods, critical thinking, and state of the art information in the chosen discipline. A Ph.D. aspirant has to write an entrance test and thereafter face an interview to get admission. Few of the entrance examinations recognized in India for Ph.D admission are UGC NET, CSIR UGC NET, GATE, JEST, JGEEBILS, ICMR JRF, ICAR AIEEA, and IIT JAM. There are also many other reputed research institutions and universities, which set up their own admission tests for the doctoral program. High scores in these standard examinations show that the candidates can do research and possess adequate knowledge in the relevant field to pursue the doctoral research independently. Holders are assessed through quantitative ability, analysis and subject content knowledge through multiple choices, short and long constructed responses on specific subject areas.
