Post Graduate Certificate in Geriatrics Nursing is specialized nursing course having duration of one year and it is purely specialized in providing nursing care to the elderly. This course offers an understanding of healthcare needs of geriatric patients, including comprehensive knowledge and skills needed to manage care of such patients. Some of the subjects taught include: physiology of aging, health problems of the elderly, nursing care with human dignity, legal and ethical implication in gerontological nursing, introduction to assistive technology, communication skills, counseling techniques.
One has to seek admission to the program and the minimum education requirement is a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. It is preferred if the candidates have cleared the entrance test such as AIIMS PG Nursing, JIPMER PG Nursing, CMC Vellore PG Nursing, ESIC PG Nursing, IGNOU Post Basic BSc Nursing entrance exam. Many institutes also prefer work experience of the candidate in caring of elderly patients.
