AMET University is a leading maritime university in Chennai, India, that was established to provide maritime education and training. The AMET University was set up in 1993 and it is accredited by the Directorate General of Shipping, India and deemed university recognized by the University Grants Commission. Recognized from NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), it has been accredited ‘A’ Grade. According to the NIRF Rankings 2023 that have been recently released, AMET University has been placed in the rank of 101-150 in the University ranking system. 

AMET University has a comprehensive portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with specializations in many areas of maritime, engineering and management. Among the admitted course offer are B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science, BBA Shipping and Logistics, MBA Port and Shipping Management among others. University operates under the Semester System, and tests are generally administered in November and April. Applications for admission to the 2024 batch in various programmes is expected to open by July 2023. Students can use online forms on the University’s website or directly write to the admission committee. Students are required to qualify the entrance test namely ATMA (AMET University Management Aptitude Test) or any other relevant test; merit in the qualifying examination is also considered for selection.  

It has good placement record, as most of the shipping logistic and allied companies are vying with each other to sponsor campus recruitment drive every year. Campus placements are one of the biggest attractions and all-round 98.45% of campus selection eligible students get placed. Prominent recruiting companies are Maersk, MSC Shipping, Pacific International Lines, Neptune Orient Lines, Synergy Marine Group, etc. Students have been placed well with respect to the salary offers that they have received The highest international CTC offered was around 42 LPA while the average domestic CTC offered was around 6 LPA. The university has an organized Corporate Relations and Career Advancement Department to equip the students into the job market.

Academy of Maritime Education and Training University Eligibility Criteria 2024 (by Departments)

1. Bachelors of Science in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering – For admissions in Bachelors of Science, candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics as compulsory subjects and must have secured minimum 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics separately as well as in aggregate.  

2. BTech Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering: Passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as the subjects of study securing not less than 60% marks in aggregate as well as in the specified subjects. They should have obtained a valid score in JEE Mains as well.

3. Master of Technology (Naval Architecture & Ship Building) – Passed 4-year Bachelor of Technology with specialization in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA. Valid GATE score mandatory.  

4. Bachelor of Science (Shipbuilding & Repair) – Applicants must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science/Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry or any other equivalent examination securing not less than 60% aggregate marks in the same. You should not have any visible physical ailment and or have any form of blemish on your body.  

5. Bachelor of Tech (Marine Engineering) - Should have passed 10+2 examination in Physics, chemistry, mathematics stream or its equivalent with at least 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics separately and in aggregate. Should have valid score in JEE Mains as this would be the qualifying examination.

6. Master of Technology (Marine Engineering and Management) – Course Successfully Completed B.E/B.Having a Bachelor’s degree in Tech in Marine/Mechanical/Automobile Engineering or Naval Architecture with 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in the qualifying examination. A valid GATE score is mandatory as per the IIT Guwahati norms.

The Academy of Maritime Education and Training University (AMET) stands for providing maritime education and having a list of courses for students who are willing to join the merchant navy and also the maritime industries. It is noteworthy that AMET is recognized by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India.

AMET currently provides the bachelors’ degree programmes in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering and post graduate diplomas in Nautical Science. The programs leading to BTech are of three-year duration and encompass theoretical knowledge and practical training in navigation, cargo handling, meteorology, naval architecture, and onboard sea training. The MSc program is a 2 year course which contains advanced topics like navigation, shipping management, shipping business, laws related to shipping etc. 

They also provide short term pre sea courses like GP Rating, Saloon Rating, and many more Civil courses. This training is provided in the marine workshop of the university which includes laboratories, simulators, a swimming pool, and even a firefighting mockup. AMET has placed its students in various reputed shipping companies both in India and in overseas.
