Birsa Agricultural University also known as BAU is an agricultural university serving its prime location in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. It was established in 1981, and it has been accredited with the ‘A’ grade conferred by NAAC: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council. As per NIRF ranking in 2023, BAU was at 51 where 100 best agricultural universities of India were listed. 

This university provides learning for undergraduate and postgraduate level in various disciplines of agriculture, horticulture, forestry and related science fields. Major streams comprising of these universities include BSc Agriculture, BSc Horticulture, BVSc and AH, BTech Food Technology, MSc Agriculture with specializations in Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Pathology etc. Admission process begins May every year. For the purpose of admissions in the UG programs, it is mandatory to be merit passed in the qualifying examination. Therefore, in cases of PG and Phd courses, the university has a common entrance examination. Exam dates for admission in 2024 are - application form closing date is June 30, 2023, PPST exam date is on July 15, 2023 and first seat allotment list is on August 01, 2023.

The placement cell has consistently placed its students in renowned agricultural and food processing companies in India. Some of the major recruiting companies are ITC, Godrej Agrovet, Hatsun Agro Products, Mahindra Agri Solutions etc.for 2023 batch more than 80 companies visited on campus selection and the highest salary offered was rs.14000/- P.A. A research showed that more than 85 percent of the students got placed and the salary offered was between 50000 to 70000 per month. The main positions provided are in sectors such as agriculture operations, food industry, science and technology, finance and exports.

Birsa Agricultural University Eligibility Criteria 2024 (by Departments)

1. BSc Agriculture (4 years)

- Science stream from 10+2 with either Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry and Biology 

- As for the academic qualification, it is mandatory for the candidate to secure at least 50% marks in the aggregate for the general category.

- There is no restriction on the age of the participant who can participate in this association.

- Relaxation of as per norms in case of reserved category

2. BSc Horticulture (4 years)  

- A candidate with at least 10+2 education from a recognized Institute/University in science stream with Physics, Chemistry, Maths/Biology

- Minimum 50% marks have to be scored in aggregate to pass the exam for general category.  

- Age limit – No bar.

- Some concessions in relaxation for the reserved categories as per the norms

3. BVSc and AH equals 5 years.

- A candidate having passed 10+2 in science stream with major subjects as Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

- For the general category, the applicants should have a minimum of 50% aggregate percentage. 

- There is no cut-off age to become a member in this club which is an added advantage.

4. MSc Agriculture (2 years)

- A candidate must hold a BSc Agriculture degree and should have passed with an aggregate of at least 50% marks.

- Some concessions provided to the reserved categories as per the rules and regulations

- No age limit

5. MSc Horticulture (2 years)

- At least 50% aggregate marks in the BSc Horticulture degree 

- For the people of the reserved categories, there are relaxation norms that need to be followed.

- No age limit

6. PhD Agriculture/Horticulture (3 years)  

- A Master’s degree in a relevant field with not less than second division.

- It defines relaxation for reserved categories as per norms.

- No age limit

- In some cases, the candidate may have to write a qualifying examination.

Birsa Agricultural University Courses Details 2024

The Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), which is named after the tribal icon Birsa Munda is established at Ranchi, Jharkhand. Among them it provides a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in agricultural sciences and related disciplines. 

BAU provides 4-year Honours degree programs such as BSc in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering, Sericulture, and Food Science. However, it also provides 2-years Master’s degree courses such as MSc Agronomy, MSc Soil Science, MSc Plant Pathology, MSc Entomology, MSc Horticulture, MSc Agriculture Economics, MSc Extension Education, MSc Genetics & Plant Breeding, MSc Seed Science etc. Moreover, BAU offers postgraduate research programs resulting in award of Ph.D degree in disciplines such as Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Horticulture, Plant Pathology and Agricultural Economics.

Placement is another significant aspect of Birsa Agricultural University which provides placement assistance to the students through the placement cell of the institution. The placement statistics of the session 2021-22 reveal that 75 plus companies visited the institution and placed the students of different domains. The maximum salary offered to the students was Rs 18 lakhs per annum offered by Reliance and the salary range of 4.5 lakhs per annum was average. Others among the leading recruiters were ITC, Godrej Agrovet Ltd, National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Ltd, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ambuja Cement Ltd, Britannia Industries Ltd, nationalized banks etc. The institute is very successful in placing its students, with about 84% of the registered candidates being placed through campus placement drive. The increase in numbers of companies coming for recruitment to the campus also point to the industry oriented programmes that are being implemented to the students.
