Presidency University, School of Design is one of the best design colleges based in Bangalore, India. It was established in the year 2020 and is a constituent college of Presidency University which is a Unitary Type Deemed to be University. It is necessary to note that Presidency University is approved by the University Grants Commission and recognized by the Government of India. It has also been accredited by NAAC, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and has been graded as ‘A’. In the NIRF Rankings 2023, Presidency University has been ranked 101-150 in the University category. 

The School of Design provides bachelors and masters degree programs in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Textile & Apparel Design, and Design Management. They are primarily aimed at design theories and practices in order to develop creativity and innovation. The undergraduate programs include 4-year Bachelors of Design in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Textile & Apparel Design. The 2-year Master’s programs that are being offered are M.Des in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Textile & Apparel Design and Master of Design in Design Management. The admission process for 2024 batch will begin from July 2023. For the purpose of shortlisting meritorious candidates, the test for design aptitude as well as a personal interview will be arranged.  

The School of Design has good relations with the industry and thus, has good placement prospects for its students. Some prominent companies that offer such jobs are IBM, Accenture, Infosys, Reliance, Myntra, Adobe, Microsoft, Samsung, ITC, HCL, TCS and Real Image Media Technologies, Publicis Sapient and others. In the previous year, more than 85% of the graduating students got placed, and the average salary of the graduating batch ranged between 5-8 LPA for undergraduate students and 8-12 LPA for postgraduate students. The maximum pay roll given in the previous year offer was 15 LPA.

1. A candidate who wants to apply for an undergraduate design program should have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 50 % marks in average.  

2. As part of the admission process, the university requires applicants to take and pass a design aptitude test, which aims to measure the candidate’s creativity and analytical skills.

3. Applicants have to provide a statement of purpose regarding interests and motivations to pursue the design program.

4. Applicants are required to provide portfolio of their own artwork, sketches, drawings etc. proving basic design skills.

5. Employees with a previous experience in fine arts, architecture, visual arts or design are preferred in the selection process.  

6. Successful candidates are required to come for an interview session where they showcase their portfolio and engage in a conversation with members of faculties regarding their preferences.

These programs offer a strong emphasis on conceptual understanding and practical skills, and their duration is four years. The 2-year postgraduate programs are more focused and they are research-based programs. PhD program consists of intense research under the supervision of faculty members.

The programs incorporate liberal teaching approaches such as design thinking, experimentation, visit to Industries and capstone projects to enhance student’s career in design. Students also get chances to display and share their work in exhibitions and publications.

The School of Design in Presidency University has always boasted of high placement rates for its students. More than 85% of the intake is through campus placements with reputed companies such as Tata Elxsi, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys and Accenture visiting the campus every year. The maximum number of placements in the year 2021 made was from Tata elxsi with a highest Package of 12 lakhs per annum. The salary structure is moderate with the average salary package going up to Rs. 4-6 lakhs per annum. Some of the key recruiters are design firms, IT service firms, automobile industries, consumer industries, architecture firms and advertising agencies that offer jobs like visual designer, UX designer, graphic designer, product designer and communication designer to the graduates as per their field of study.
