The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, abbreviated as NUJS, is a prestigious National Law University in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal. It was set up in year 1999, and it is affiliated to the Bar Council of India and is also approved by the University Grants Commission of India. NAAC has accredited NUJS with Grade A and among the law universities, it has secured the 4th position as per the NIRF Rankings 2023. 

It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and provides undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses in different fields of law. The programs that are offered are five-year integrated course in BA LLB (Hons), one-year Master Programme, LLM and Doctorial Programme: LLD/PhD. The admission process to the school usually starts in April every year. For the candidates applying for the BA LLB programme, the admissions are done through the examination known as the Common Law Admission Test or CLAT and then there is counselling. I still have not found the information about the key exam dates for CLAT 2024. LLM and research programs are offered at NUJS, where the university conducts its own entrance test. The approximate final date for admissions for the 2024-25 batch across courses would be in May 2024.

The university placement programmes assist the graduates to find jobs and 80% of the graduates are able to find placements through the programmes. Some of the leading companies that engage in hiring the legal professionals are Khaitan & Co, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB Partners, Trilegal, ICICI Bank, Flipkart and Bajaj. The maximum salary package provided during the 2021-22 placement session went up to approx. Rs. 1.2 crores per annum for the domestic placements in India. Off campus drives have also provided employment opportunities to NUJS students with exposures to reputed international organizations such as Baker McKenzie, Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance etc.

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Eligibility Criteria 2024 (by Departments)

1. B. A., LL. B. (Hons.) – The candidate must have passed 10 + 2 examination in any stream with not less than 50% marks (45% for SC/ST) and the minimum age to join the course should not be more than 20 years as on 1st July of admission year.
2. Master of Laws (LL.M.) – The candidate must have bachelor’s degree in law (LL.B./ B.A. LL.B.) with not less than 50% marks (45% for SC/ST) for recognized university in India.
3. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) – Candidates having the following qualification can apply: – Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree with not less than 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST) for admission test in NET/SLET.
4. Postgraduate Diploma in Alternative Dispute Resolution (PG Dip. ADR) – The candidate should have passed Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with 50% of the aggregate marks from a recognized University in any discipline for the open category candidates and 45% for SC/ST/OBC category candidates.
5. Diploma Course in Family Mediation (DCFM) – There is no specific provision regarding the eligibility criteria mentioned as such on the website of University yet.
6. Diploma in Paralegal Practice (DPP) – Not stated on the University website The Diploma in Paralegal Practice is a two-year programme.
