Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a central university specializing in maritime education that was set up in the year 2008, as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. IMU is a UGC recognised University and has its campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, Visakhapatnam and Kandla. This is recognized by All India Council For Technical Education and is ‘A’ graded by National Assessment and Accreditation Council. In the rankings for 2023 NIRF, IMU has come to the 76th position among universities of India.
IMU has many programs for undergraduate and postgraduate levels in 6 campuses of the university and some of the major programs are B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Tech Naval Architecture &Ocean Engineering, BSc Nautical Science, MBA Port &Shipping Management and Ph.D programs. The admission process begins in the month of January of each year through an IMU-CET common entrance test conducted across the country in June and then followed by counseling sessions. The academic year starts from August and it has two examination sessions in December and May The above mentioned programs also offer admission through JEE Mains Score.
The IMU Placement record is exemplary; most of the premier shipping, logistic, marine engineering, and port management companies visit the campus for placements every year. Some prominent companies offering jobs in this sector are Fleet Management, Wallem Ship Management, Anglo Eastern Ship Management, Pacific International Lines, Essar Shipping, Adani Ports etc; the average salary offering in this field varies from ? 5 lakhs to ? 15 lakhs per annum. Through the university placement cell, more than 85% of the student get placed in various companies and industries. The highest salary package was ?27 lakhs per annum which was provided in the placements conducted in the year 2022.

Indian Maritime University Placements 2024
The Indian Maritime University has well placed records in providing placements to the graduating students. The IMU is affiliated with major shipping and logistics firms including Maersk, MSC, Pacific International Lines, and Adani Ports to offer its students internship and employment opportunities. According to the data obtained for the year 2022, over 83% of the total number of students who were eligible were placed through campus placements. The maximum salary package was Rs.32 lakh per annum offered from Fleet Management Limited. I found that the overall pay scale for the students belonging to various streams such as Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Naval Architecture, etc was between Rs 6-8 lakhs per annum. The top recruiters were Pacific International Lines, Essar Shipping, Great Eastern Shipping and Shreyas Shipping as there were numerous opportunities of employment for the IMU graduates due to the scarcity of skilled personnel in the maritime industry.
