Indian Maritime University (IMU), which was set up in the year 2008, is one of the specialized universities recognized by the Government of India for imparting standard education in the maritime sector. IMU is an accredited university by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and acknowledged by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). 

NAAC has graded IMU at A, which is a major achievement for the University. In the NIRF rankings of the year 2023, the IMU was at the 76th position among all the university systems in India. IMU has its headquarters as well as campuses situated at Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and other coastal areas of India. More than 6000 students enrol for the IMU courses offered at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level as well as research such as PhD.

IMU provides academic Programs in the field of Marine Engineering, Nautical Sciences, Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, Port & Shipping Management & Logistics & Supply Chain Management. Some of the vital assessments comprise IMU CET for UG & PG courses, GATE for M.Tech. It begins during the months of January and February through the IMU online application system. Indian Maritime University Eligibility Criteria 2024 (by Departments)

1. BTech Marine Engineering

Candidate should have completed 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics for which the candidate must have secured 60% aggregate. Should have passed the test common in the IMU. The candidate should be fit medically as per the policy framed by the DG shipping.

2. BSc Nautical Science

Candidate must have completed 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and a minimum of 60% percent in aggregate. Should have passed the entrance examination in the Institute of Management and University (IMU). In accordance with the guidelines set by the DG Shipping, the specific vision standards demanded.  

3. MTech Marine Engineering 

Minimum one year of post-qualifying experience possessing BE/BTech in Mechanical/Marine Engineering with 60% marks. Valid GATE score required. Sponsored candidates who have two years of post-degree work experience can apply the same without the GATE score.

4. I Master in Science Commercial Shipping & Logistics

Post Graduate in any discipline with not less than a 50% average throughout the course. Any sponsored candidates with two years prior work experience in the appropriate field may attend the course. The other candidates have to take entrance test.

5. PhD programmes

Recognized master degree in a relevant discipline with not less than 55% aggregate marks. It was qualified in the entrance examination for the Phd programs of IMU. Understanding of the subject matter within the proposed research area.

6. Diploma in Nautical Science

passed 10+2 examination in any stream with 50% aggregate marks. Eye sight standards in accordance with DG Shipping regulations.

IMU being affiliated to the Ministry of Shipping provides an array of maritime programs at its Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam campuses. The IMU has a very good placement record where the students are placed in the liner companies. Many international shipping and logistics companies such as Maersk Line, Pacific International Lines, and Fleet Ship Management patronise it for campus recruitment. In 2022 the event was attended by 80+ companies which offered more than 300 positions to the students of International Maritime University. The maximum salary given was Rs.25,00,000 per annum..The placement was offered by Fleet Ship Management. For all the branches as a mean wage index was computed and it was Rs. 6.5 lakhs per annum. Campus placements were achieved as demonstrated by over 85% of the eligible students who were offered jobs. Some of the key recruiters were Adani Ports, Great Eastern Ship, Essar Shipping and Varun Shipping Company, where candidates were required for profiles in deck and marine engineering in merchant navy and port sectors. The IMU’s also has links to industries, which makes the institution to produce quality graduates who are easily absorbed to the job market.
