SPA is a renowned higher learning institution in India offering educational programs in the areas of planning, architecture design and management. SPA was set up in 1941 and is a statutory affiliated institute under the Department of Education with nineteen teaching divisions in four campuses at New Delhi, Bhopal, Vijayawada and Bhubaneswar. The NAAC has graded it as ‘A’ and the NIRF Ranking of 2023 has placed this university in the 27th position overall. SPA was founded in 1946 and it provides programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level which is approved by the Council of Architecture and All India Council for Technical Education. 

In line with this, SPA provides several undergraduate and postgraduate programs in streams including Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architectural Conservation, Building Engineering and Management, Industrial Design, Transportation Planning, and more. In addition, the process of admission includes passing an aptitude test conducted by the institute and merit based on the marks obtained in the previous qualifying examination. Here is the details of the general admission schedule for 2019 exams for 2024 admissions Application form is available from November 2023 and can be filled up till January 2024 The aptitude test will be held in the second week of May 2024 followed by the counselling and final admission process. 

In the past few years, SPA has been observing a high level of placements done. It opens doors to the top government recruiters like DMRC, NBCC, TCPO and leading private sector like Tata Projects, Lodha Group, Mahindra Lifespaces, JP infra, Shapoorji Pallonji, HCC etc with an impressive pay package from 8 LPA to 18 LPA. Out of the total students graduating from SPA, 80 percent of them get placed through campus recruitment and the pay scale vary from 7-10 lakh per annum. The campus placement record shows that the highest salary offered during 2022 placement was about 18 LPA.

School of Planning and Architecture Eligibility Criteria 2024 (by Departments)

1. Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) - Passed 10+2 or equivalent from any central/state government recognized university or board with Mathematics as a compulsory subject and minimum 50% marks aggregate. Some concepts and designs required.

2. Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan) – For admission in this course candidate must passed 10+2 or equivalent examination and must have secured minimum 50% marks in the aggregate. Should have passed Mathematics in 10+2 level or equivalent and must be a Science graduate. Creative aptitude preferred.  

3. Master of Urban Planning - A Bachelor degree in Architecture/Planning or civil engineering passed with minimum 50% aggregate marks. The candidate must have had sat for the GATE and must possess a valid score on the test.

4. Master of Architecture - Possessing Bachelors degree in Architecture with minimum 50% aggregate marks is mandatory. This Page requires a portfolio of the architecture projects. 

5. Master of Planning – He/She must possess Bachelor of Architecture/Planning/Engineering/Geography/ Economics or any other related discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. 

6. Ph.D Programme :This programme requires candidate to have master’s degree in the related discipline. For admission to any course, the candidate must have secured a minimum of 55% of marks in aggregate. Some of the assignments that should be completed include research proposal.

School of Planning and Architecture Courses Details 2024

The academic programs offered by the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) include the Undergraduate program, the Postgraduate program, and the Doctoral program in the fields such as Urban Planning, Urban Designing, Regional Planning, Transport Planning, Housing, Rural Planning, Environmental Planning, Planning Techniques, and Geographical Information Systems. SPA is a constituent of GTU and it has four centers in Bhopal, Vijayawada, New Delhi and Vijayawada and has approximately 800 students.

The undergraduate programs including Bachelors in Planning, B.Arch, B.Des etc ranges from four to five years in duration and cover basic aspects of planning and architecture including specialization. The postgraduate programs are 2 years duration with specializations like infrastructure planning, Housing planning regional planning etc. They are more into concepts and research. The duration of the PhD and MPhil programs is 2-5 years and both of these programs are research based.
