It is called as one of the oldest universities in India and was officially founded in 1857 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The university has obtained approval from the UGC and has been acknowledged by the Government of India with an ‘A’ grade by NAAC. NIRF rankings in 2023 have placed the University of Madras at 25 among universities in India. It provides FOR undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D programmes for faculties like Arts, Science, Engineering, Law, Management and Education. It has a vast area of land spread over six different locations in Tamil Nadu and therefore has emerged as one of the most popular destinations for students pursuing their higher studies in South India.
The University has over 200 programs and courses across disciplines for students to study from. In the undergraduate level, the B.A, B.Sc and B.Com are the most popular courses offered by the universities. With regards to the admissions procedure, the company admits students based on their performance in the qualifying examination. In post graduate programmes M.A., M.Sc, MCom, MBA and MCA are taught through the semester based credit system. There are written entrance examinations for MBA, MCA, and M.Sc. programmes. Some of the major examinations are Semester examinations that are held in April/May and November/December, and arrear examinations conducted in February/March. The admission process for intake 2024 shall begin in May 2023. The application can be made through the admission portal of the university and the candidates must pay the application fee.
University has their own separate placement cell where they arrange job opportunities for students of all the departments without fail. Almost all the companies appearing for recruitment are reputed MNCs that include Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro, TCS and Accenture offer job opportunities, which are primarily offered in the IT sector. A standard package that most companies offer start from 3-4 lakhs per annum. The institution has also been recording an average of 70% of the registered students who have been placed through campus placements over the last five years. The highest salary mentioned has crossed over 15 lakhs per annum for computer science stream. The University of Madras is a university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India; it was established in 1857 and is one of the oldest universities in the country. It currently provides undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, and doctoral programs from a host of disciplines such as arts, science, engineering, technology, management, law, and education, among others.
The courses leading to an award at the university follow the semester system in most cases. There is stiff competition where admission is based on scores obtained in the qualifying examination or entrance tests. Intake per course also differs, with some courses admitting as few as 25 students while others accommodate up to 250 students per year. English is the medium of instruction for majority of the programs offered in all the colleges and universities throughout the country. It should also be noted that many departments also offer part-time, evening, weekend and distance learning programs.

The University of Madras has well established placement cell which helps to get placements for the students from all the programs offered by the university. Several organizations that recruit talents from the university include Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, Accenture and Tech Mahindra. The placement rate of the session 2021-22 reached to more than 80 percent with the highest salary package of Rs 18 lakh per annum by the IT companies. In the previous year, engineering graduates were offered an average emolument of Rs 4,21,388 per year. For MBA’s, the maximum was Rs 12 lakh and the median Rs. 6.5 lakh. The placement cell has more than 500 companies for the MoU tie up and offers recruitment drives, skill development process and Pre-Placement Talks to the students for the successful placements.
