GNIT is a Private Engineering college in Kolkata offering various Undergraduate programs in Engineering and technology disciplines like Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering. The criterion of eligibility is a little different from the department to department that is, about Computer Science IT and ECE department, the candidate should have secured 50% in aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in their 12th boards. For Electrical, Mechanical and Civil, a pass in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology with 50% combined percentage of marks is mandatory. At the undergraduate level, GNIT offers admissions to B.Tech with the students having to appear for national level tests as JEE Main and WBJEE. For MTech admissions, there is no exemption from submitting valid GATE score and a BTech degree.
The major streams include Computer Science & Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics & communication, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical and Civil branches. GNIT provides the following programs in its respective departments of Engineering: BTech, MTech, and MCA. The exams are conducted as follows – WBJEE is conducted in the last week of April in 2023 whereas JEE Main has its sessions in the month of January, February, March, April and May of 2023. The date for GATE 2023 examination will be in February 2023. In June 2023 after the results of WBJEE and JEE Main, students can register themselves for online counseling for admission in B.Tech. They include registration which entails filling of choices, seat allotment and fee payment. For admissions, in MCA and MTech, institute level counseling takes place after the candidates have appeared for exams and applied directly through GNIT. The academic session mostly starts from the last week of July each year.

Documents Required for Admission in GNIT Kolkata for Different Courses:
- Merit List: The admission process mainly involves admitting students in accordance with the merit list prepared as per the score they have scored in the previous qualifying examination (10+2 examinations).
- Cut-off Marks: Students need to meet certain standards, known as cut-off marks in relation to the category they fall under. The cut-offs are different every year and depend on factors such as the number of students who applied for the course and the number of seats available for admissions, for instance.
- Reservation: Governments rules of reservation applicable category wise are available for SC, ST, OBC etc seats available. Students falling under these categories are given admissions in the institutions by lowering the minimum passing marks.
- Entrance Test: While there are some B.Sc programs that require a written test, GNIT Kolkata might hold its own entrance exam. It may be added that the merit list besides taking into account the marks in this examination, includes the marks secured in 10+2 examination also.
- Personal Interview: Before the final admission list is produced, candidates may be invited for a session of personal interview from which the final list will be produced from.

- There does not seem to be any measure of ability that is not considered in determining the admission rates of the students. To be eligible for the admission, the candidates required passing 10+2 or equivalent examination with minimum 50% marks.
- As for the SC/ST/OBC category students, the minimum percentage that they need to score is 45%.
- The ability of a student to gain admission into an institution depends only on the mark that he or she gets in the qualifying examination. GNIT has the counselling sessions and the candidates are provided with the seat as per their ranks, Availability of seats and options chosen during counselling.
