Applied Linguistics is a postgraduate program that deals with the scientific analysis of language and its usage. This is a postgraduate program, but it is flexible with full-time completion taking about 2 years; however, there are also part-time options that may take 3-4 years. These are general areas of study that are offered in the curriculum such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, methods of teaching languages, second language acquisition, language testing and assessment, language policy and planning among others. Students are able to study certain aspects of language in a methodical way and then apply their findings to various practical fields such as communication, education, translation etc.
The graduate school entrance exams recognized for the admission in MA Applied Linguistics across the world include GRE and IELTS for measuring the quantitative, verbal and writing aptitude. Some universities also accept GMAT, TOEFL or PTE scores instead of GRE scores or may require both the tests. Further, academic background relevant statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and interview performance are also other factors considered during admission. Some universities may have different minimum score requirements.
