The Master of Arts or MA is a postgraduate academic master’s degree awarded by universities in many countries. More often, it is taught in arts, humanities, and social science courses such as History, Sociology, Political Science, English Literature, Economics, and the like. MA is usually pursued after the completion of a bachelor’s degree, and it takes 1 or 2 years at the most when done on a full-time basis. It is aimed at providing the opportunity for the advanced study and development of research skills in the chosen specialization. Course work entails theoretical lessons at an advanced level, research methods, writing skills, among others; at the end of the course, students are required to complete a dissertation/thesis that involved research work within the area of specialization.
The entrance exams considered for entrance into MA courses in India are tests that include TANCET, GATE, CAT, MAT, XAT and many others depending on the respective university as well as the area of specialization chosen. Some other national level tests that are also taken as qualifying tests for MA programmes are UGC NET, JEST, JNUEE, TISSNET etc. Many colleges and universities have their own entrance tests to admit students for MA programs across the country. Another criterion for admission to MA is good performance in relevant bachelor’s degree. Thus, admission is based on the scores achieved in the tests conducted at the national or state level and the marks obtained in graduation.
