M.Phil. Or Master of Philosophy in English Literature is a postgraduate research degree that takes about 2 years to complete. The program offers an intense and focused study on different sub fields of English literature such as poetry, drama, fiction, literary theory, students will be expected to undertake research projects under the supervision of faculty members and submit a dissertation at the end of this program. Course work includes topics in research methodology, analysis of scholarly articles, writing of research proposals and papers.
Some of the common entrance examinations that are accepted for admissions into M.Phil English Literature are UGC NET in English, CSIR NET in English, TIFR GS and JNUEE. This also applies to colleges which admit students on merit through performance in qualifying postgraduate examinations such as the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts English examinations. There are some institutes that conduct their own Ph.D. entrance tests for providing admission to M.Phil. programs.
