The Ph.D., or Doctor of Philosophy, is a four-year program that is the highest level of education offered by universities. A Ph.D. course takes 3-5 years and includes writing a thesis based on one’s research work conducted under the supervision of a supervisor. A crucial aspect of the Ph.D. is a student’s self-constructed research that results in a thesis contributing to the student’s area of specialization. First-year and second-year coursework gives students the necessary background and gives them a foundation of skills they may need for their research. The last of the requirement involves defending the Ph.D. thesis after which is awarded a degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In addition, many students working on their Ph.D. can teach or have other assistant responsibilities to get some practice and receive stipends. In academics, the Ph.D. degree aims at producing scholars to teach and do research in universities and other institutions as well as in industry.
Some of the general entry tests that are prevalent for Ph.D. admissions include Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) for business and management Ph.D. programs, and also the JEST and CSIR-NET required for science Ph.D. programs in India. Its also important that applicants obtain high scores in tests that would show their ability and understanding of topics that are taught at the undergraduate level. Lifting from the previous point, apart from good entrance test scores and grades, research experience and some publications also play a role in getting admission in Ph.D. The applied procedure is selective and the primary goals of the selection are to find candidates who are willing to perform independent research.
