Chemical Sciences Ph.D. is a 3-5 year doctorate research program that looks at the development of new knowledge in different fields of chemistry. Student conducts research usually for his/her thesis or dissertation under the supervision of a faculty member in areas such as organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, theoretical chemistry or chemical engineering. The Ph.D. curriculum involves coursework at an advanced level in the field of specialization of the student, seminars, qualifying examination, research, and thesis defending a dissertation that presented their new finding in chemical science. Common course work includes teaching or lab assisting for most students and presentation of research at scientific conferences and in peer reviewed journals is mandatory for most Ph.D. programs.

GRE: Graduate Record Examination and subject GRE tests offered for the Ph.D. Chemical Sciences programs are recognized forms of entrance examination. Minimum GRE verbal and quantitative scores may be expected for admission to many programs and acceptable performance on other more advanced tests such as biology, chemistry or physics GRE, exams that test the understanding of undergrad concepts in these areas. Other graduate admission tests that can be used instead of the GRE include the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Academic transcripts, recommendation letters, statement of purpose and research experience also play a crucial role in acceptance conditions.
