Ph.D in Sculpture is a postgraduate program in Sculpting which concentrates on the higher learning and the research in the sculpting material, ideas and evolution of the art of sculpture. As for the period of study, the majority of sculpture Ph.D programs take between 3 and 5 years to complete. The first 2 years focus on studies such as sculpture techniques, art concepts, art history lectures, options and tutorials, and special subjects. The sculpture concepts include casting, carving, modeling, constructions and sculpture making in different forms such as clay, stone, metal, wood and others and understanding of sculpture in a given culture and history. The final 2-3 year emphasis is on creating and finalizing a dissertation that includes extensive, primary research and portfolio of sculptures that explore the self-identity and personal ideas.

The entrance examination that is recognized for admission to the Ph.D sculpture programs are the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test: This examination assesses verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing abilities. Some universities might also accept Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) instead of GRE that assesses quantitative skills, verbal, integrated reasoning and analytical writing skills. Other standard application prerequisites are also the presentation of a portfolio that reflects the candidate’s artistic skills, ability to think creatively, and letters of recommendation evaluating the candidate’s scholarly potential, academic transcripts from previous degrees, personal statement, which describes the candidate’s research interests, and TOEFL/IELTS scores for foreign applicants. Other possibilities are interview and on-site assessments may also be performed during the admission process.

Ph.D(Sculpture) Course Eligibility 2024

1. Minimum Educational Qualifications: The candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with specialization or major in Sculpture with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grades from any University recognized by Indian Universities.

2. MFA Sculpture with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade point, and PG Diploma in Graphic Art & Designing from a recognized University. It may be possible for some universities to directly admit candidates who were successful in their Bachelor’s degree.  

3. This could be a qualifying score in the entrance examination conducted by the university like NET/SET. There are institutes which set their own entrance examination for students seeking admission.

4. Providing a research proposal that falls under one of the specified research areas disclosed by the university Sculpture department.

5. Cleaning the interview in which an individual presents a portfolio of their sculptures and they are asked about art history, studio abilities and research skills etc. 

6. Some art institutes may require work experience, preferably of two years duration. Other conditions could be related to the publication list, exhibition participation, recommendations etc.
