Ph.D. in Animal Science is a three to four years doctoral study programme which aims at the scientific advancements in the different domains of animal farming, dairy science, poultry science etc. The students are engaged in doing research work in the fields like genetics, nutrition, physiology, biotechnology, quality and safety of animal derived foods under the supervision of faculty members. The program take 4-6 years of study on average offered course and writing of thesis or dissertation. Most institutions of higher learning provide Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science with options in sub-disciplines such as animal reproduction, management of animal populations, feeds and nutrition etc. so as to enable the students to develop specializations in their areas of concern.
The common graduate school entrance exams accepted for admission to Ph.D. Animal Science programs at most universities are: GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and TOEFL (For International students), while some of the institutes may also consider GMAT and CAT examination scores. Likewise, students get the admission and partial scholarship for their research work by passing the JRF/SRF (Junior/Senior Research fellowship) examination. Some of the standardized tests in conjunction with recommendations and statement of purpose are crucial when one is being considered for a Ph.D. The admission may also involve other evaluative criteria such as work experience relevant to the degree, may be publications.
