Biotechnology is a field of study that deals with the use of living organisms, biological systems, cells or cell components for production and in service industries and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in Biotechnology is a postgraduate degree programme that deals with the same subject matter at a higher level. Although the Ph.D. Biotechnology has not been standardized, the program usually takes between 3-5 years during which students are expected to complete their coursework, research and write thesis. The course work focuses on various areas of biotechnology namely genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, microbial technology, plant and animal biotechnology immunotechnology and nanobiotechnology among others. The students also pursue intensive research in a specific subfield of biotechnology since the completion of the program requires them to write and defend a thesis.

The admission to Ph.D. Biotechnology programme is based on entrance tests where some of the entrance exams accepted are UGC NET, GATE, JEST, BET and GRE. They are usually administered in the period between April and July in each calendar year. Some of the institutes also have their own entrance examinations apart from the national and state level entrance tests. The application process usually starts in September and October and close in March and April of the next year. Students who take the test have to attend an interview before they can be admitted into the Institution. Some of these time-sensitive activities include submission of the Ph.D. application before the due date, prepping for entrance examination if required, and an interview upon the shortlisting.
