Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities is a doctorate degree program in humanities that takes students through three levels of their academic pursuit. Humanities involves the study of human culture and some of areas of study under this field are literature, philosophy, history, languages, arts, music. The Ph.D. program duration depends with the university but normally takes between four to six years. It consists of a course work part and the dissertation part. The coursework is developed to enhance the research skills through the subject specific advanced courses, methodological courses, writing.
The common entrance exams accepted for Ph.D. in Humanities are: SET/SLET in the subject, RES/RLET or any other related Examination or JRF, UGC NET in the subject. There are some universities where students have to sit for a written test and/ or interview as well. Candidates who have performed well in the national or state level examinations may be given a chance to join fellowships.

1. A first degree in relevant field of study with not less than fifty-five percent (55%) average in the university.
2. First and foremost, the candidate must possess a Master’s degree in the relevant field from any recognized University securing a minimum of 55% of the total marks.
3. Pass any University Level Test for admission like UGC NET/JRF, SET, or any entrance test conducted by the respective university.
4. Interview round is conducted with shortlisted candidates where communication skills, research ability and knowledge of the subject is tested.
5. The last short list formation from the results of the written test, interview, academic achievements and research experience.
6. Other requirements like writing and completion of articles, work experience and letters of reference may be necessary depending on the university.
