Doctor of Philosophy in Material Science is a 3-5 year doctoral level program that deals with the study analysis and research of the chemical and physical characteristics or the micro structure of materials. The curriculum includes specialized courses in such fields as materials physics, thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, ceramics and composites, polymers, biomaterials, nano-materials. Students obtain research experience and use research facilities including materials growth and characterization facilities. 

The major entrance examinations that are acceptable for admission into Ph.D. Material Science programme include GATE, CSIR NET, TIFR GS, GATE & IIT JAM, JEST, GPAT and other individual entrance test / interview of the respective institute in combination with the assessment of the academic performance and statement of purpose.

1. Completed a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree program in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Mechanical, Electrical, and so on with at least 60% marks from a recognized university.  

2. Some of the tests include national or state level entrance examination for admission in programs like GATE/NET or any examination conducted by the institutes providing Ph.D. in Material Science.

3. Selecting the students meeting the following criteria: entrance exam, average scores in bachelor, research proposal, and interview conducted by the selection committee of the respective institute.  

4. A minimum of 2 years of research/industry experience might be sought by some institutes, but is not mandatory.

5. Knowledge and understanding of the strong fundamentals in Physics, Chemist, Maths and characterization techniques. 

6. Desire to learn, capacity to study, drive to research, and clear communication skills.
