Doctor of Philosophy in Social Sciences is an academic postgraduate research degree program that can take 4-6 years of the study and is aimed at offering advanced study in sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology and economics. Students receive thorough academic preparation and gain in-depth knowledge in a selected sub-discipline of the Social Sciences; students are required to complete an original research study in the form of a dissertation.

Applicants are free to choose entrance tests depending on the university of their choice however some common tests that are accepted include the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test that aims at measuring verbal reasoning. Depending on the specific program, some also consider graduate level management admission test (GMAT), the state level eligibility tests (SLET) or the national eligibility tests (NET) in social science subjects. 2. Pass UGC NET/JRF examination or any other equivalent national eligibility test to prove research proficiency

3. Academic transcript and record of recent research experience evidenced by papers, submissions, and presentations. 

4. Qualitative score in the written test that is conducted by university or institute where the Ph.D. program is offered. 

5. ICRO which stands for Interview Clearance Round of the overall assessment focuses on the research interests, aptitude and fundamentals of the candidate.

6. Honour other requirements such as recommendations and meet other standards that may be set by a university.
