The Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS) Leh is a Buddhist centre of learning and research situated in Leh, Jammu and Kashmir. CIBS Leh was initiated in the year 1959 and is accredited by the University Grants Commission of India, and accredited by Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It has received NAAC accreditation in the year 2020 with B++ grade accreditation. As per the NIRF rankings of the year 2023, CIBS Leh has been ranked 65 among the colleges in India.
Several programs are offered by CIBS Leh at Undergraduate, postgraduate and research level concerning buddhist studies, philosophy and culture. Some of the main courses are BA (Hons) Buddhist Studies, MA Buddhist Studies, PG Diploma in Buddhist Studies and PhD Buddhist Studies. The admission process begins from March every year and the exams are held in the month of May for under graduate courses and June for post graduate courses. The admission criteria include passing the CIBS entrance exam and/or passing merit based on the qualifying examination. However, extra weightage is given to the candidates belonging to the Ladakh region.
CIBS Leh helps its students to get internships and placements in related fields. Some of the best employers for recruitment include Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, All India Radio Leh, Doordarshan Kendra Leh, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and so on. About 60% students get placed with average salary packages ranging from Rs 20,000-35,000 per month. Some of the students also clear the National Eligibility Test (NET) and pursue higher studies and research after their Masters from CIBS Leh. 1. Bachelor of Arts (Buddhist Studies): Candidate must have passed 10+2 examination in any stream with minimum 50% marks in aggregate from any recognized board. Should have knowledge in basic Buddhism or willing to learn basic Buddhism as compulsory subject.
2. Master of Arts (Buddhist Studies): A Master degree in Buddhist Studies or any related fields such as History, Philosophy, Psychology and other allied discipline with not less than 50% marks from a recognized University.
3. Diploma in Buddhist Studies: They should have completed their 10+2 in any stream with a minimum of 50% of marks in aggregate. Some background information about the Buddhist religion and its principles is beneficial.
4. Certificate in Applied Buddhism: Have minimum 50% aggregate marks in Class 10 standard examination from a recognized board of education. General interest and some background in Buddhism as a religion and spirituality.
5. PhD in Buddhist Studies: Bachelor’s degree in Buddhist Studies or any other related discipline with minimum 55% aggregate percentage. Publication in a peer-reviewed journal about Buddhism or research proposal that is relevant.
6. Post-Graduate Diploma in Buddhist Tour and Travel Management: A graduate degree in any field but with sufficient understanding of history, culture and tourism industries. Fluency in English and specific interests in Buddhism and the tourism sector are preferred.
The Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS) in Leh, the Ladakh region of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has several courses in Buddhist philosophy, history, culture, and languages. It was founded in 1959 in order to protect and develop the culture of Buddhist Ladakh.
