The CIFE stands for Central Institute of Fisheries Education, which is one of the premier national Fisheries Universities in India, established in 1961 under the Ministry of Agriculture. The institute is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been awarded an ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the NIRF Rankings 2023, CIFE was ranked 32 of Fisheries Sciences in India.
CIFE provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in different specialization of fisheries science teaching. The main courses being taught in the University are B.F.Sc. in Fisheries Science, M.F.Sc. fields include Aquaculture, Fish Processing Technology, Aquatic Environment Management, Fisheries Resource Management, Fish Nutrition & Feed Technology, Fisheries Engineering & Technology and Marine Biology. This is an admission process that begins in the month of May every year and the exams are held in July. The particulars for the batch of 2024, the application process will start mid-May of the year 2023. The candidates who are interested in joining the position can submit the form either online or offline before the last date.
CIFE enjoys a good and healthy placement in leading fisheries companies and the research organizations visit the campus every year for placements. With an average of over 80% students getting placed, the highest salary package was Rs.16 LPA offered by companies in 2022. Some companies that recruit candidates include the Coastal Corporation Limited, IGATE Solutions, Tata Consulting Engineers Limited, National Fisheries Development Board, Aqua Technology Limited, and Marine Products Export Development Authority that offered various profiles like Fish Technologists, Quality Managers, Aquaculture Engineers etc. The salary that was offered by these organizations was in between Rs 5-8 lakhs per annum. 1. Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science – The candidates must possess a Bachelor degree in Fisheries Science or any other related subject and should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the qualifying degree examination from a recognized university.
2. Master’s degree in Fisheries Science – Candidate who passed a Bachelor’s degree programme in Fisheries Science or any other related subject with an overall percentage of marks 60% or above. Education qualification for the entrance examination was also a necessity.
3. Master’s degree in Fisheries Science /Fishery Science /Aquaculture /Marine Science / Zoology /Life Sciences /Biological Science / Animal Science/ Veterinary Science with minimum 60% marks. They must score in the entrance exam that must be followed by an interview too.
4. Diploma in Aquaculture – Any candidate who has passed 10 + 2 examination in science stream with minimum 50% combined marks. The entrance examination is conducted, and thereafter the candidate is interviewed.
5. A certificate course in fisheries is available for students who have passed their 10+2 examinations in science stream. The criteria of selection includes academic achievement in terms of grade point average and performance in the interview.
6. Mid-level training - Postgraduate courses or qualifications in Fisheries, Zoology, Marine Biology or any related field with a Bachelor’s degree. On the basis of class XII in admittances, entrance test and interview.
Central Institute of Fisheries Education provides various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in the areas of fisheries sciences and aquaculture. The UG programmes relates to train students in areas such as fisheries resource management, aquaculture, fishing technology, fish processing technology and so on. The B.F.Sc is four year programme, designed to produce qualified fishery scientist and managers.
At the postgraduate level, CIFE offers the M.F.Sc and M.Tech programmes which are two year duration specialization courses in the areas related to Aquaculture, Fish Processing Technology, Fisheries Resource Management, Aquatic Environment Management etc. These programmes help the students to develop advanced knowledge and research skills. CIFE also has PhD courses in different fisheries and aquaculture disciplines for the encouragement of research activities in the discipline.
