Central Institute Of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) is a deemed university established at Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was founded in 1967 with specializations in Buddhist Philosophy, Tibetan Culture and Religion. UGC has recognized CIHTS and it holds the accreditation of grade ‘A’ granted by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the NIRF rankings released in 2023, CIHTS has been ranked 76 among all the universities in India.
CIHTS holds several programs in Undergraduate, Post graduate and MPhil/Ph.D level in the following areas of specialization such as Buddhist Philosophy and Religion, Buddhist Languages, Buddhist Historical Studies, Art and Culture etc. Some of the main courses offered are: B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. courses in Buddhist Studies, Tibetan Studies, Sanskrit Studies, Chinese Studies etc. The institute has adopted semester system and admission in all the courses is through an entrance examination held every year in May-June. They take place in November-December while the results are released in January. The admission process for the 2024 batch will start from March-April 2023.
CIHTS has linkages with other institutes in India and other countries for student exchange programs, joint research, etc. Its Centre for Buddhist Studies is actively involved with numerous universities throughout the world. Many of the students are placed in academics, research institutions, monasteries, cultural bodies etc Some of the top recruiters are Delhi University, JNU, Namgyal Monastery, Central University of Tibetan Studies, Central University of Himachal Pradesh and many more. Placement offers with an average salary package of 5-8 lakhs per annum are offered to the students. Central Institute Of Higher Tibetan Studies Eligibility Criteria 2024 (by Departments)
1. Acharya program: This post must be held by a candidate who has completed a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University and should have secured a minimum of 45% marks in the aggregate. Fluency in Tibetan or English is a requirement, as is passing an examination for admission.
2. Master's program: Pass in bachelor’s degree of recognized university with minimum 45% marks in the relevant subject. For admission, the candidate’s performance in the entrance examination is taken into account in combination with the results of the qualifying degree.
3. MPhil program: Minimum 45% marks in post graduation degree in relevant subject. Selection is based on entrance test performance, research proposal and academic record.
4. PhD program: It will be mandatory for the candidate to possess Master degree with minimum of 55% marks in concerned subject. Admission is based on research proposal, entrance test marks and interview performance as per rules and regulations.
5. Certificate programs: The most common qualification expected before one can be awarded a certificate is a pass in the 10+2 examination. For such programs, it is required to have a bachelor’s degree as per the norms set down by the institution. Student selection is based on academic achievements.
6. Diploma programs: 10+2 examination qualification needed for diploma courses in general. In certain specialized diplomas, it may be necessary to graduate with a pass percentage according to the norms. Academic merit is considered.
