The Forest Research Institute (FRI) is one of the leading research organizations in the field of forestry situated in Dehradun, which comes under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change. It was established in 1906 and it is in the front line in the provision of capacities for the exercise and research in forestry and other related disciplines. FRI is an Institute recognized by the University Grants Commission, and it is NAAC accredited ‘A’ Grade Institute. As per NIRF 2023 ranking for university & colleges, Forest Research Institute was ranked 28 on research institutions.
FRI now provides the postgraduate diploma, masters and PhD courses in the various fields of forestry such as Silviculture, Tree Improvement & Pest Management, Environment Science, Biodiversity & Sustainable Forest Management, Climate Change & Its Impact on Forests, Natural Resource Management etc The entrance test and/or an interview are required for the admission in most of the courses. For PG Diploma courses, the admission process involves the marks that have been obtained in respective qualifying examination. In masters and PhD programs, the necessary examination for admission is CAT/NET. As for the admission, it is generally opened in March-April and only shortlisted candidates are offered the opportunity to join the University in July for the August intake. Till date, exams are conducted mostly in May or June.
Placement is one of the significant advantages of studying at FRI as the institute helps its post-graduate students to find the best job. Some of the well-known government, public and private organizations which recruit students from FRI are Forest Survey of lndia, Wildlife Institute of India, lndian Forest Service, BISAG, WAPCOS, HPCL, ONGC, Genpact, Tata Consultancy Services, Reliance Industries, ITC Ltd, etc,. There are more than 100 companies which visit FRI for campus and off campus recruitment every year. If just graduated from the FRI, freshers can expect to earn anything between Rs. 3 lakh to 7 lakh per annum for jobs in forestry, environmental sciences, wildlife conservation, and other related fields. The trend of placement of PG passouts has been always impressive and is showing above 90 percent every year.

1. Bachelor of Science (Forestry): must have completed 10 + 2 or equivalent examination in Science with not less than 50% marks. Must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Mathematics in the 10+2 examination. There is upper age limit of 22 years for students belonging to General category.
2. Master of Science (Forestry): A candidate must have degree in Science/Forestry or any related field with minimum 55% marks. The opportunity is open for Bachelor’s degree final year students as well. Course is of two years’ duration which includes the preparation of a thesis at the end.
3. Master of Forestry: Minimum qualification for the candidates is that they should be a graduate in Science/ Forestry/ Agriculture or in any other related stream with 60% marks. Any final year bachelors students can also apply. Course entails theory, field visits and completion of a dissertation of 20,000 words.
4. Doctor of Philosophy (Forestry): It is a must for the applicants to possess a Master’s degree in Forestry or any other relevant field, securing more than 60% aggregate marks. Students should provide a research proposal during registration at the time of choosing their program. They should be completed in minimum 3 years with submission and defense of a thesis.
5. Post Graduate Diploma Courses: Candidates having BTech or BSc in Science/Forestry or any other relevant discipline with a minimum of 50% aggregate are eligible. Diploma courses are 1-year full-time course offered on campus. Admission requirements include; Specializations available are in the different subfields under Forestry.
6. Certificate Courses: These short 6 months courses are open for the candidates passed 10+2 examination having Science subjects. Basically, the courses offered in the institutions offer an introduction into subjects such as Forestry, Wildlife management, Ecotourism and the like. The fees for the certificate courses range between Rs. 8000 and Rs. 15000.

These courses for the in-service personnel take 1 week up to 6 months.
