The process of accepting and who can enter these programs is different. Certain courses graduating from MTech/MS pass an entrance exam - GATE, and others just depend on merit, interviews etc.
- Candidates get admission into different disciplines/branches, depending on their JEE Advanced rank, filling themselves in the order of preference and turn availability of seats. Top-branching courses, like computer science, will get filled by the first few ranks the most.
- IIT Madras provides its students with special academic policies, besides students being allowed to change disciplines after their first year of study only for meritorious students based on internal test scores after a predetermined CGPA threshold.
