Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University also known as TNMFAU is a state university in Chennai, Tamil Nadu which provides education in the field of music and fine arts. Set up in 2013, TNMFAU is recognized by the University Grants Commission [UGC] and the Association of Indian Universities [AIU] [11]. It has been awarded ‘A’ Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2020. The NIRF Rankings 2023 put TNMFAU at the 65th position out of the universities in India.
TNMFAU presents different undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil and PhD programs in faculties of Music, Fine Arts, Architecture and Design, Arts and Cultural Studies. The common programs offered are BPA, BMPA, BFA, MFA, MA Music, MPA, MCA and Int. MSc. The university has semester exams in November and April of the year. The admission process for the 2024 batch will begin in May 2023. The admission criteria include merit in the qualifying examination or entrance test, depending on the programme.
TNMFAU has an active Placement Cell for providing internships and placements to the students in various reputed organizations. Some of the major companies that recruit are ISRO, HCL, Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Accenture, Cognizant, L&T, IRCON, Simco Tech etc The placement record of the college is quite good where every year more than 200 students get placed with an average salary of Rs. 3-8 lakhs per annum. The maximum salary offered was Rs. 15 lakhs per annum. The placement data of the university reveals that the overall placement rate was around 80 to 90 percent in the last few years, which points towards favorable career prospects for the graduates.

1. For undergraduate degree programmes like BPA, BFA, and BA in Music & Fine Arts – Candidates should have passed 12th standard or equivalent examination of any recognized board. should have studied related subjects. Total grade requirements may differ across courses commonly ranging between 40-50%.
2. The following should apply for the postgraduate programs such as MPA, MFA – The applicant should possess the relevant bachelor’s degree with minimum average pass mark, often in the range of 45-60% from an accredited university. This is because some program require clearance of entrance examinations.
3. For diploma programs in music, dance and fine arts there is requirement of pass in 10th standard. For some of the specializations, 12th pass is compulsory with minimum percentage ranging between 35-50% depending on the course.
4. For Ph.D & M.Phil - Post graduation in relevant specialization with minimum 55% aggregate marks. Should qualify related entrance examination if any. Research proposal also needed in some instances.
5. Other requirements include providing certificates of training or work experience for certain master’s and most diploma programs. Recommendation letters also had to be written sometimes.
6. Few programs have age limit criterion, in which upper age limit relaxation is provided to the reserved categories. Nativity certificates are required in some circumstances related to scholarship and admission requirements.
TNMFAU provides diploma, under graduate, post graduate and doctoral level courses in music, dance, visual and performing arts. Some of the major programs offered across the six campuses and fifty-three affiliated colleges are B.Music, B.Dance, B.Fine Arts, M.Music, M.Dance, M.Visual Arts, M.Phil, and Ph.D.
The university has the vision to spread the Tamil arts and culture through education. Its curriculum encompasses theory and practical training. Skilled teachers educate students in vocals, instruments, theory, dance forms, techniques on visual arts, art history etc, apart from examinations students have to perform in public and submit project reports/dissertations for the completion of their programs.
