The Sanskrit College and University is one of the educational institutions based in Kolkata in India. It was established in 1824 and is one of the oldest universities in India dedicated to the study of Sanskrit language and literature. It has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade ‘A’ and has been ranked in the band 101-150 universities by NIRF Ranking 2023.
This university provides a wide variety of degree and diploma courses in a variety of fields. In the fields of Sanskrit, the Institute offers academic courses such as Shastri (B.A), Acharya (M.A) along with titles comparable to M.Phil and Ph.D The Institute also offers under graduate and post graduate programs in fields including Bengali, English, History, philosophy , Political Science and many more. Papers are normally taken in the months of March-April each year for each course or subject offered. Application for admission for the 2024 academic year will be from May-June 2023, with university and college entrance tests for most degree courses.
The college provided placements at reputed companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, IBM, British Telecom and etc. by recruiting the students of The sanskrit college and University. About 15 % of the university graduates get placed in reputed companies, the maximum salary package offered to the students is up to 8 to 9 lakh per annum to the students belong to computer science and IT field. Thus, it remains to be an esteemed university maintaining the tradition of innovative research and learning in Sanskrit for nearly about two centuries.

1. The admission requirements for applying to undergraduate programs are a pass in 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 50% marks in aggregate (45% in case of the reserved category candidates). Subject requirements differ depending on the program of the learner.
2. For postgraduate programs, the candidates should have passed the relevant bachelor’s degree with minimum 50% marks in aggregate (45% for SC/ST/OBC candidates). There can be specific subject requirements for an undergraduate degree course.
3. It is mandatory for the candidates who are applying for MPhil and PhD programs to possess a post graduate degree in the relevant subject from a recognized University with not less than 55% of the marks taken in all the subjects together (50% for SC/ST/OBC/ Physically challenged candidates). There are also the entrance exams and interviews as well, though the last two tend to be much more common.
4. Diploma programs can be completed after 10+2 with different percentage codes for individual programs. The degree of background knowledge may vary depending on the specialization and may be required.
5. Certificate programs are offered to candidates who have completed 10+2 education. They also specify that percentage criteria is program specific.
6. For all the programs, there could be restrictions based on the upper age limit. Relaxation in the reserved category as per the rules of the government.
Kolkata’s Sanskrit College and University located in West Bengal was founded in 1824 during the British colonial rule. It is one of the oldest Sanskrit college in India and provides various subjects in Sanskrit literature, Philosophy, Jyotish, Veda, Vyakaran etc. at Undergraduate, Post Graduate, M.Phil and Ph.D level.
The duration of the undergraduate courses such as the Shastri degree is 3 years in general. The postgraduate Acharya course is of 2 years. The Vidyavaridhi degree or Ph.D. program must compulsorily take at least 2 years of completion. Firstly, it has an entrance test for admission.
