Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy in Geography is the terminal or highest degree awarded in geographical studies. The degree normally takes about 5-6 years of full time study and research to complete. The Ph.D. geography program trains students in Physical geography, Human geography, Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote sensing, spatial analysis, Environmental studies. Students become specialised in a sub discipline of geography and carry out research and write a dissertation that contributes to the knowledge base.
Accepted examinations include UGC NET, CSIR NET, GATE, JEST, JGEEBILS for the admission to Ph.D. in Geography in Indian Universities. Moreover, many universities have their own written examinations and interviews to assess the knowledge of the geography content and research potential of the applicants. Compassionate recommendation letters, statement of purpose, and interview besides sounding potential admission through good performance in these entrance exams can be of immense help.
