West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata has listed several undergraduate and postgraduate courses in law for students from different departments. The B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) program that is provided by the university also considers national standard tests such as CLAT, LSAT-India for admission. The basic requirements are, the candidate must pass 10+2 exams and must have an aggregate of 50% marks. The LL.M. program is awarded across 9 specializations including Corporate Law, IP & Information Technology Law, Media & Entertainment Laws where CLAT PG, LSAT-India and other national level entrance exams are considered for admission. Only candidates who have a degree in law i.e. LLB and who have secured a minimum of 50% marks will be considered for the online application process. Likewise, the university also provides for Ph.D. in Law, for which there is a minimum requirement of 55% in LLM.
The different programs taught in West Bengal NUJS are B. A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.Master in different fields of specialization, Doctor of Philosophy in Law in various areas of discipline. The important examination dates for the admission to the courses for 2024 batch include: CLAT 2024 Exam: May 2024 LSAT-India 2024 Exams: May and June 2024. The normal requirement in the usage of the application starts early January every year with the publication of exam notification and application for the form. The candidates are required to complete the application forms, appear for CLAT/ LSAT-India examination (where necessary), meet the cutoff requirements and go through the counselling process for admission. There is no favoritism and the selection process is conducted fairly and based on merit.
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) Kolkata Admission process is carried out every year in the undergraduate and postgraduate law programs. There are two ways through which a candidate can proceed for the NUJS admission process, and that is through the online process and the offline process.
As a result, for the online application process for NUJS admission, candidates must visit the official website of the University at nujs.edu and select admissions. In addition, they are required to sign up, complete the registration form and attach copies of necessary documents scanned. The application fee can be paid either online through net banking, Debit card, Credit card. In completing the online applications, the following must be observed where applicable: All online applications must be submitted before the stated last date.
In some cases the admission is done online while in other cases it is done offline and for the offline admission, the candidates have to download the admission application form from the official website of the institution. Original and self-attested copies of the application forms accompanied with the demand draft of the application fees and attested copies of documents must be submitted at the under mentioned NUJS Kolkata address within the prescribed application period. It is noteworthy that the factors that are considered by the NUJS include the score that the candidates obtained in CLAT, the academic achievements of the candidates, group discussion or personal interview.
- The online application for admission into the school commenced in December 2022. It was on January 15th, 2023 that they closed the online application process.
- The basic requirement includes having a 5 year integrated B.A LL.B /B.Sc LL.B /B.B.A LL.B. or having a 3-year LLB with not less than 50% marks in the aggregate (45% in case of SC/ST/PWD category) .
- The criteria for admission to the university are the NLAT score and an interview with members of the faculty.
- The NLAT 2023 examination was held On 29-01-2023 in Online – Remote Proctored mode. This means that the outcome is expected to be released early February for all students who sat their examinations.
- Selection will be done and the list of shortlisted candidates will be announced in mid-February 2023 and the successful candidates will be invited for an interview. Teleconferencing facilities will be made available to the candidates in the event they cannot make it for physical attendance.
- The final merit list containing the list of all qualifying candidates is expected to be released by the end of February/first week of March 2023.
- It has even a restricted number of seats for total intake for the LLM program, only being 20. It is important to note that competition for admissions to these universities is quite steep with applicants normally having high ranks/grades in their undergraduate law degrees.
- It has separate admissions for the first year and the subsequent years; the first-year pupils are admitted after passing an entrance test and an interview. The minimum required aggregate mark percentage for a candidate is 50% for general category and 45% for SC/ST candidates in their LL.B. degree to be eligible which may be considered as a parameter of convenience.
- The entrance test consists of 100 questions chosen randomly and in multiple choice format, designed to assess general legal knowledge, legal aptitude and logic.
- The candidates who are selected in the written examination are called for the interview session, which is conducted by a faculty member. The interview is designed to evaluate your academic record, interest in the subject field, and your research capability.
- For foreign nationals they admit on the basis of the grade or class obtained in the undergraduate law degree, and letters of recommendation. They also required to fill a statement of purpose and they may be required to be interviewed online .
- There may also be additional positive factors during the selection process where a candidate has had previous work experience in law or allied areas or has published articles.
- The final selection is done after aggregation of scores which are obtained from the candidate’s performance in the written examination as well as the interview, backed up by academic credential and work experience and any other relevant factors that may be considered appropriate.
- As for scholarships, they are normally advertised around end of March to April every year. As for the exact dates of the seminars in 2023, they have not been released yet.
- For this, candidates usually have to possess a Master of Laws (LLM) with at least 55% marks or equivalent qualification as per norms prescribed by the Bar Council of India.
- There are no tuition fees charged from the students and the students are selected on merit through a written examination and an interview. The written test also include subjects such as, research methodology, over view of the research work that the candidate intends to undertake, legal advanced research ability etc.
- The availability of places is very limited - on average in 2022, approximately 12-15 places were available for such directions as Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Intellectual Property Law, etc.
- The first two years of the fellowship, Rs. 25,000 per month is paid to selected scholars, the next three years Rs. 28,000 per month is paid.
- It takes at least three years to complete a PhD while the maximum period allowed is six years.
- The candidates must have a Master of Laws (LLM) Degree with not less than fifty-five per cent marks or its equivalent grade. Final year LLM candidates can also avail this opportunity in case they are interested.

- However, the candidates who have appeared in the written test they have to secure minimum 50 percent marks in the written test for gen category (45 percent for SC/ST/OBC/Differently-abled). The candidates who secure minimum qualifying marks in the written test will be called for an interview.
- The final merit list will be prepared by taking into account of the aggregate performance of the candidates in the written examination and interview. weightage is as follows:

- The policy on the reservation of seats will be according to the government norms for SC/ST/OBC/Differently-abled persons.
- Others who are not required to take the written entrance test are candidates holding qualified UGC NET (including JRF)/SLET/SET and who have been awarded fellowship by UGC/CSIR. They come out for the interview themselves.
