A PhD or Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering is the highest level of education available in the engineering profession. This may take 4-6 years of study and research after obtaining the basic degree of Bachelor of Engineering. The Ph.D. program comprises of higher learning in a specific area of engineering alongside several research and writing of a Ph.D. thesis. First two years involve taking of courses in research methodologies, engineering analysis and design, mathematics and elective courses in the subfield in which the student has interest. This is then succeeded by a qualifying exam meant for measuring high level conceptual knowledge. The final 2-4 years is spent in conducting individual research under the supervision of a faculty member by writing a dissertation that presents an innovative concept in the field of engineering.
The most widely accepted entrance exams for admission into the Ph.D. Engineering programs at various universities are: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) that assesses verbal, quantitative as well as analytical writing skills and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) to check knowledge of concepts learnt at the undergraduate level in engineering disciplines respectively and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for non-native English speaking candidates, which provides the measure of English language proficiency. Some institutes may also set up their own research potential written examination and interviews to check the candidate’s aptitude and knowledge in the chosen subject. Another factor is the minimum test scores; alongside the minimum test scores, a good academic record enhances the likely hood of admission.
