Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science is a terminal degree awarded to students in the course of library science. On average it takes between three and five years to complete the Ph.D LIS program. The coursework comprises of masters level and research courses in areas such as information searching and retrieval, knowledge management, library and Information Science management, metadata, academic librarianship and digital libraries.
The common tests which are acceptable for admission to Ph.D in Library and Information Science are UGC NET (National Eligibility Test), SET (State Eligibility Test), PET (Ph.D. Entrance Test) or tests conducted by individual universities and institutions. Some of the institutions may also have their admission based on the performance in a qualifying master’s degree.

1. A pass in Master of Library and Information Science of a recognized University with not less than 55% of the total marks. It may be mandatory for some universities to have NET/SLET qualification.
2. High percentage of marks or CGPA in Master’s degree or good academic record with relevant credentials. According to some institutes, first division is compulsory in the Masters program.
3. Marks obtained in the entrance test conducted by the university or interview for Ph.D admission.
4. Having prior research experience, publishing articles in national or international journals, presenting papers at conferences is beneficial.
5. An important document that includes the overview of the proposed Ph.D research topic, gaps that the specific research will seek to fill, and the research methodology among others to be submitted by the candidate.
6. Letters of reference from LIS scholars attesting to the candidate’s research capability. Passing any research methodology examination if administered by the institute.
