B.Sc. Gemology is an undergraduate degree program that deals with the identification and analysis of gemstones and other valuable materials. This programme takes a 3-year degree which offers vast knowledge on areas such as crystallography, optical mineralogy, diamonds grading, colored stones, gemstone instruments, and gemstone treatment. Students are able to acquire skills in the assessment of gemstone quality and treatment. The goal of the program is to train professional gemologists and specialists in the field of jewelry. Some of their areas include formation, sources, chemical properties of gems, crystal systems, and even optical phenomena. There are practical sessions on the use of gem testing instruments as well. The graduates are ready to practice in gemstone business and trading, jewelry merchandising, appraisal among other areas.
Entrance exams considered for admissions to the B.Sc. Gemology are on the institute since they rely on it. Some of the national standard exams are JEE – mains, SBVU All India entrance test, IGU exam, and Assam CEE. Some colleges may also give entrance based on the scores obtained in Class 12. A few institutes conduct their own examination for selection of candidates for the program, based on knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as per 10+2 syllabus and logical ability for gemology and awareness of English language and color vision may also be tested during admission. Before one is finally offered a place in an institution, the shortlisted candidates are subjected to counseling sessions.
