Ph.D. (Music) is a third level academic program that deals with the advanced teachings of music and its subdisciplines including musicology, ethnomusicology. The normal period of study in the Ph.D. (Music) program is between three and five years.
There are various entrance exams accepted for admissions into the Ph.D. (Music) programs among which some prominent ones are: NET conducted by UGC in Music subject and entrance tests conducted by many central and state level universities for admission to Ph.D courses in respective university and some universities conduct audition tests apart from the theory test to check the practical knowledge in music. Several universities and institutions also accept the valid GATE score or score in the UGC-CSIR examination for admission to the Ph.D program in the Music stream.

1. The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in music with at least 55% of the marks or equivalent grade awarded by any university recognized by the University Grants Commission.
2. This must be complemented by a minimum 55% Marks in masters degree in music or its equivalent grade. It is mandatory that one has a good academic background.
3. For the entrance exam conducted by the university/institute, ensure that the candidate secures a good rank. Comprehensive examinations assess research skills and subject proficiency.
4. Standard interview round to evaluate the research interests, subject matter and communication capability around one’s interests.
5. Suggest an appropriate research topic based on the faculty interests explaining why the topic is important and what area of study it encompasses.
6. Examples of published papers, performance / compositions, conference presentations etc. are expected to be produced.
